I am going to write summaries of the interviews so far backwards. Only because I have the most recent photos and such at hand. I met Betsy, Jake and Andrea yesterday and I just fell in love with this curly-haired bright eyed little boy. Jake is about 18 months and affected in all four limbs. I also had my little helper Owen along. However Owen was terrified by lots of things (cars that make noises, monsters? not sure on that one) so he stayed close by my side.
I felt I knew them both for a long time. It was very relaxed and they seemed to have a good perspective despite some challenges with doctors early on.
I am going to pull out a few highlights from the video later this week and will update the post. There was one thing that Betsy said that really stuck in my mind. We talked about describing Jake’s condition or AMC overall. She replied to her it is just a description because all the kids are so unique in their afflictions. I never thought about it that way, but it is true. When I tell people Owen is special needs (another term I despise) they instantly think it is mental and physical. Not the case at all. Owen and all our AMCers are so bright, they are only limited by their physical challenges.
In the meantime, here are some pics of the family. Check out Jake’s curly hair. The first photo is my favorite because it looks like Jake is thinking What are you talking about?!
