Losing Sight of the Most Important Goal

by amcdocumentary on January 28, 2009

I have been struggling the past few weeks. I have a tendency to try and make everything I touch perfect. As a result I am never satisifed and end up being my worst critic. I have filmed 7 interviews to date and have roughly 50 more in queue. I lost sight of what I was trying to accomplish and became focused on making the footage look really edgy.

As a mom of a child with special needs, I don’t care how cool the video is, I want to hear the story. I know when I was pregnant if I could have found 5 videos showing me real people and their lives, it would have made a difference. Initially I had to rely on the arthrogryposis text atlas, doctors negative input and a few stories online. I wanted to see the people and spend time in their everyday. I wanted to know all the good and the bad.

That’s when I realized this isn’t about making a documentary with special effects and Hollywood production values. This is about us, all of us, sharing our stories and inspiring other families.

Since I have started this project, I have met so many wonderful people. People from around the world that reached out to share their story. It also introduced me to a little girl in Egypt named Dolagy (you will read more about her later). I learned that one person can make a difference, but a community can inspire thousands.

So when I finish the first interview, don’t look for a high end production. Instead I hope you will feel that you get to know a bit about the family, learn more about the condition and see how it changed our lives for the better.

I’ll keep practicing and one day I will add the cool effects. But for now, I want to share your stories…our stories.

I think you hit the nail on the head – the story, the connection of putting faces to stories and experiences and showing just how “normal” we all are is what counts. You will do an amazing job and probably affect more than you know. Leave the special effects for MTV and just show this great AMC Community and your work will speak for itself. Hugs to you!
